Barn doors are a fun design element. We use them frequently in our designs to add an unexpected component. They can fit into many design and decor styles. We have been asked if we think that barn doors are a trend. So far, they have been utilized in many different ways and even if they end up on their way out; we don’t think it’s a design trend that our clients would regret.

There are lots of different ways to use sliding barn doors and dress them up, so they work in many applications. There are countless options for hardware and colors. They can be customized to fit in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and bathrooms. We have even had fun using barn doors on custom furniture. They are a great way to add architectural interest, especially in spaces that may lack character. 

Closet Barn Door

Some benefits for barn doors include adding space. Limited space in a room? Adding a barn door eliminates a door swing and opens up more floor area. You do have to be certain that there is enough wall space for a door or doors to slide on a track. They can act as a room divider, headboard, closet door, mirror hanger, window treatments, and more. They can provide functionality, privacy, and decor. 

Bedroom Sliding Barn Doors

Barn doors can also improve light in spaces that normal doors can’t. They can disguise design mistakes, like uneven flooring. Glass or windows in the door can create ambiance, while metal doors can be more industrial or modern. Chalkboard finishes add a touch of whimsy. If you are considering a pocket door, a barn door is great alternative in the right space. If you are trying to include more storage in your home, disguising shelving or storage with barn doors is also an option. Different widths and heights are readily available, so finding a custom door to fit a tricky spaces is a great solution.
